I'm probably going to piss off a whole bunch of Tom Holland fans as I write this, but him playing Spider-Man initially just didn't sit well with me. After growing up on a steady diet of Tobey Maguire's Spidey and then, very briefly, Andrew Garfield's, this teenage boy—with his annoying best friend Ned and unimpressive, hesitant-looking MJ—felt like a complete eyewash, almost mocking the entire Spider-Man franchise.
However, he slowly and steadily slipped his way into my heart by becoming Iron Man's annoying child prodigy, and he has finally hit the nail on the head with "Brand New Day." He has finally done the entire, multi-generational Spider-Man franchise complete justice as a very mildly brooding but mostly slapstick-funny superhero with a heart. Tom Holland has outdone himself as the lonely adult who has had to choose between love, friendship, and duty. Your heart truly goes out to him as he slowly and steadily climbs the superhero ladder, winning the hearts of local citizens and the New York police force—all at the cost of sacrificing his friendship with Ned and the love of his life, MJ.
Your heart breaks for him when the reality of his choice sets in. Making the people closest to him forget who he is leaves him so deeply sad that he suddenly has to deal with heightened senses and organic webs emanating from his wrists. These webs mutate overnight because he undergoes the sudden trauma of witnessing his loved ones living independent lives without him, forgetting him completely. Still, he deals with one supervillain after the next in his usual, comic, all-heart style, winning over the heart of even Jean Grey (which makes me guess there is a new X-Men movie coming out soon).
It indeed felt like a brand new day with Tom Holland. He is all grown up now and has done the suit complete justice. I can't think of a better way to have spent a weekend morning. Kudos to the "Brand New Day" cast and crew—you've made a truly special movie!
